"the malformed 18-to-25-year-old male brain". . . ~PIC~

Source: NY Times op-ed page:

A series of op-eds about the Vietnam War prompted one reader, who was drafted in 1967, to write in April: "I have spent much time lately thinking about why I allowed myself to be put in that situation a situation that I expected not to survive. ... A partial answer ... is the malformed 18 to 25 year old male brain. It is a brain wracked by peer pressure, fueled by hero narratives, and over-confident if confused by the real world. On a recent trip back to Vietnam I had a chance encounter with a Buddhist monk who asked me pointedly why I chose to fight there. After my nonanswer, he simply said 'it was not your fault, you were merely a victim of ignorance.' Maybe it is just that simple."
